The Ask

Following the FOX acquisition by The Walt Disney Company, Direct-to-Consumer Technology got the privilege to redesign the National Geographic app. The team wanted to take the opportunity to develop a more immersive experience with elegant UI and motion when possible.

The Prototype

Prism Design System in National Geographic

Working with my team and the design leads, we put together a quick native iOS prototype. This prototype just contained a mock home screen. This mock home screen contained all of the card types we hoped to get into an MVP launch. These components were also based on our Prism Design system spec. More on Prism here.

The Results

Prototype in Motion

This was a smaller prototype by my team but was turned around in a couple of days. It proved that having a design system approach allowed us to move faster as a design and engineering team. It also exposed areas of improvement in our design system which are currently being applied.

National Geographic’s first build is set to launch in January of 2021.
